The Right Look: Smart Casual With “Washed” Tones
When we talk about “washed tones” we are not being technical, quite the contrary, they can fit perfectly in the definition of light tones or pastel tones, but we have to admit that there are some colors that seem to have faded over time (or use) and that gives them a special charm.
Why does it work?
The combination of casual pieces is perfect: a well-cut blazer, fitted jeans and a dark sweater drawing attention to the chest area and, consequently, the face. But the master touch of this look is in the mixture of two colors that seem to have been created in the washing machine: the brown / beige of the blazer and the gray of the pants.
The blazer with patch pockets is the most informal model of all, but still retains its elegance, and the color different from the traditional navy or gray helps to keep the garment under interest. The combination with gray jeans gives the modern touch, where the man is more open to chromatic harmonies made with very light tones, even in winter or mid-season.
I really like the idea of the mesh with the discreet black roudstooth pattern on a graphite gray background, creating some contrast for the look, however a combination only with the white T-shirt underneath would also be an option for a hotter day.
The footwear was an interesting choice. The printed leather (or canvas?) Gives a bolder look to such a perfect look. Opting for such open shoes also surprised me, I would take a more conventional path there, but I didn’t like it, I just found it unusual.
Try it…
exchanging the shirt for a white cotton shirt , the collar showing up will add some extra points of elegance, if necessary. A suede or nubuck oxford may be best received in a professional setting, think about it.
It wouldn’t be the same if…
The tones were dark, as is common in the male look. We would still have a nice look, but I would lose some of that contemporary air.
Summing up:
- Shades that seem to have been faded result in an original and interesting look, especially in the casual look;
- A good combination of pieces will work, for sure, but unusual colors increase attention;
- The dark patterned mesh creates contrast and draws attention to the chest, which is great for keeping the look close to the face;
- The footwear differs from the combo style, but it is not wrong, just unusual, in the end it ends up adding spice to the final result;
- A dress shirt under the sweater can be a good element for those who want to bring more sophistication to the ensemble;
- Dark tones would also work well, but this palette shows the trend of light colors in the male look.
