How to Combine a Jacket With a Vest in Another Color
Have you ever thought about combining your custom jacket with a tailoring vest bought separately or coming from another costume? Many of the readers of this blog have already felt this desire and constantly come to ask me how to do this without compromising the look.
I do not find it difficult to pair these pieces, but I understand that some men are not so familiar with the use of the vest, for this reason I have created a list with tips on how to do this in a simple way.
How to combine jacket with vest in another color
If you steal the vest from another costume or buy the piece separately, you will rarely be able to match the colors, so the best thing to do is to combine in the best possible way.
First of all, it is good to remember:
- Costume = jacket + pants;
- Suit = jacket + vest + pants.
1 – Tone on tone, the easiest way to combine
It doesn’t even need much explanation, just coordinate the color of the costume with the vest using the tone on tone as you would in any other situation, that is, a graphite costume like a gray vest would be a good example, but you can also do the same with navy and blue, black and gray, brown and beige, etc.
2 – Costume in neutral tone and color vest or vice versa
Usually the customs are in colors like black, graphite, gray, navy or beige and, as you well know, these are neutral colors, therefore open to combinations with any other color, from yellow to violet. Of course, common sense is also worth it at that time! 🙂
3 – May have a pattern or print, but be discreet
The vest does not need to be smooth, a very discreet and tasteful print, as the window pane, pinstripe or the Prince of Wales can make the look more stylish, however, it is good to remember that you already have a clashing piece, so exaggeration can lose everything, so a very flashy print can be too much, be moderate!
4 – Use textures to attract the eye
Fabric patterns such as herringbone or even the materials known as false smooths will give a special touch to the ensemble and attract the eye in a positive way.
5 – Exchange vests between two suits
As you can see in the photo above, it is not only customs that benefit from the stolen vest of a suit, two suits can also lend the piece to each other thus creating two new outfits.
6 – It doesn’t have to be the same fabric
You can have a blended wool vest and a smooth cold jacket, as you already kind of broke the formal dress rules it is not necessary that this combo has exactly the same fabric, just be careful with materials that are very different as a vest of thick wool with a linen blazer.
7 – Steal the color of the jacket’s plaid
If the custom has a pattern with strong colors it may be a good idea to use one of these colors in the blazer, this way the outfit looks more cohesive and well thought out, although very flashy colors can become a trap for those who want a discreet look, but always there is an option to use color in a more sober tone.
8 – Combine the accessories
I’ve been asked that a lot: it is possible to combine the accessories, such as the tie and the handkerchief with the vest. Yes, it is possible, although it is also interesting that they have something that differentiates them, such as a print or pattern, everything very flat can become tiring and boring.
9 – The more sober, the more formal
When you add a vest of another color you are making the suit slightly more casual, yet you can make the combo very serious by choosing a piece of sober tones like gray, brown, navy or black.
Final tip
Do not confuse the custom with a vest taken from another set or bought separately with the formal attire used in weddings: the tuxedo. Often it comes with a vest of another color or texture, but in this case it is a piece made with the purpose of clashing in some way with the rest, highlighting the back, and at the same time forming a set and this type of costume is more suitable for grooms, because it draws a lot of attention.
